There was a lot of fall out post Hurricane Sandy. People throughout NJ and NYC are displaced. Homes have been destroyed, people are in apartments without heat or power during the snow storm, and supplies are running low. I was working at a shelter for a bit but have been called into work since. If you can, please contribute to a local collection. Here’s one to get you started: http://www.rockawayrelief.com/
In the meantime, I’ve been commuting between LIC and my Brooklyn neighborhood, trying to find a sense of routine. I work with the city and the sense of civil responsibility is heavily felt there. My local CSA donates to a local pantry. This week more than over, our donations have been needed. I’m happy to say that 4 very large bags of fresh, organic produce were donated last Thursday so shelters who can assist those who need a hand. This happens twice a week between June-November every year.
Show your love through food or other supplies that are desperately needed (Staten Island, NJ shore, Red Hook, the Rockaways). They need toilet paper, under garments, nonperishable food items, flashlights, and so much more. Open your home to a coworker who just needs a hot shower. Buy the cupcake from the cute kids who have no idea how tremendous of an impact the storm had.
