Vegetarian Shopping List

So you’ve just decided to become a vegetarian- congrats! It’s a rewarding lifestyle that changes how you view your food environment and health. The vegetarian diet adapts from several cultural cuisines which makes it consistently interesting, exciting, and balanced.

However, your first shopping trip post-decision can be stressful. It’s essential to read the labels on every item you buy. Foods like cheese can be made with animal rennet and gelatin is often found in yogurt and jam.

I can guarantee the response you’ll hear most often is, “Where do you get your protein!?” I can also guarantee that if you’re not careful, you’ll find it super easy to slip into carbanarianism. The truth of the matter is that being a vegetarianism is healthy when done appropriately and is cheaper in the long run.

I’m going publish these lists separately as to not overwhelm. Of course, you don’t have to buy everything on these lists. These are just suggestions to get you started as you plan a well-balanced vegetarian diet. A good way to get started is by choosing three dishes you would like make that week and making a list. Whatever is left over can be lunch the next day.

The best recommendation I can offer though is be open to everything and buy something new every time. Expand your mind, palate, and happiness.

As much as I wish I could say I've been a healthy vegetarian for the past 8 years, I can't. I started off as many veg's do: eating primarily processed soy products, pasta, and pizza. I also brought meat back into my diet when I started a job in catering. When I realized that cutting out meat didn't make me feel any better and I was still gaining weight, I decided I needed to make some major changes. It's impossible to exclude factors like diet and lifestyle when you are trying feel better overall.
